A Commendable Initiative for Parents of Autistic Children

A Commendable Initiative for Parents of Autistic ChildrenA three-year pilot program is on run by the KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and Parenting Research Centre (PRC), Australia. They are backed up by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and Temasek Cares to help the parents of children with development needs.

Explaining about this initiative, authorities said that they had designed this community level program equip parents and caregivers to understand their child's difficult behavior. They will also provide an assistance to develop their own ways to manage them effectively.

Officials are trying to reach out to more than 1,000 parents in their first year of this initiative and they have a target to approach around 1,500 families over the three-year period.

They are also offering a parenting support course called "Signposts for Building Better Behaviour" which they are thinking of promoting through a network of more than 70 qualified and trained facilitators.

Professor Ho Lai Yun, the Director of the Health Ministry's Child Development Programme, said, "One of the most critical components would be the parents because the parents are the people who are going to carry the child over all the barriers”.

KKH Chief Executive Officer, Ivy Ng said that they hoped that the knowledge and skills that parents and caregivers gain from it would reduce stress levels at home.
