Thousands of people attended the ceremony at Nelson's 1903 site at the top of Trafalgar St. the emotional ceremony was held to pay a tribute to the victims of Christchurch’s quake. The ceremony was led by Nelson Bishop Richard Ellena. The crowd observed two minutes silence in respect of those who passed away in the earthquake.
Bishop prayed for all those people who had lost their homes and businesses and who were frightened by the tragedy.
Nelson MP, Nick Smith said that the ceremony was held to mourn the tragic loss of life in the earthquake. He added that the Christchurch’s quake was the worst tragedy in the history of South Island claiming the life of 240 people.
Nick Smith said that togetherness among people is very important as such crucial time. He also paid tribute to all those brave search and rescue team members, police officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, engineers, paramedics, pilots and volunteers who have helped the victims of Christchurch in the hour of need.
Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio thanked many volunteers who had worked night and day to help the victims of the quake.
