A Miscarriage Might Lead To Long Lasting Depression

A Miscarriage Might Lead To Long Lasting DepressionAccording to a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, the psychological impact of a miscarriage or a stillbirth can last for several years.

Researchers believe that the mothers may get into depression or have anxiety for long after losing a baby. Though it is very common to lose a baby through miscarriage, most of the women prefer to conceive again and previous studies also confirm that women who have lost a baby are more likely to experience anxiety and depression when they get pregnant again.

After studying 13,000 women, researchers highlighted the need for midwives to spend more time with pregnant women to talk out their worries. Data suggests that one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage, while stillbirth happens in about five in every 1,000 births.

Professor Jean Golding, founder of the Avon project, said that this study was crucial to families who had lost a baby since it was just an assumption that women get over this even quickly.

Dr. Emma Robertson Blackmore, of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, US, said, “If we offer targeted support during pregnancy to women who have previously lost a baby, we may be able to improve health outcomes for both the women and their children”.
