Moderate Drinking Defends against Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

Moderate Drinking Defends against Dementia and Alzheimer’s DiseaseDrinking alcohol may lead to many health problems but a new study claims that temperate drinking may prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Experts suggest that moderate drinking along with healthy diet and regular exercise reduce the risk of dementia. Researchers found that the cases of dementia and Alzheimer's disease were low among those who drink alcohol.

The quantity of alcohol advised for daily intake is 20-29 ml. The results of the study conclude that alcohol has some defensive qualities.

To study the impact of drinking alcohol judiciously, a research was conducted on more than 3,000 people across Germany for three years. None of these participants had been diagnosed with any form of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease at the start of the study.

The results found that participants who were moderate drinkers were 29% less likely to develop the disease as compared to those who did not drink alcohol at all. After the follow up study, 217 cases of dementia were detected and 111 cases of Alzheimer’s disease were detected among those who did not have either disease at the start of the study.

Experts say that older adults who drink alcohol regularly in moderate quantity are at a 60% less risk of developing dementia.
