Doctor Accused of Causing Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral-PalsySophia, daughter of Jennifer and Lance Schneider, is affected by cerebral palsy and a Memorial Hospital doctor is accused of medical negligence by the parents, which has led to the suffering of their child.

Cerebral palsy can be caused by an injury to brain at the time of child’s birth. The injury can be the result of infection, bleeding in the brain or due to lack of supply of oxygen to the child’s brain. The lack of oxygen supply can cause irreparable damage to brain. In the case of Sophia Schneider, she suffered injury due to lack of oxygen and was born with hypoxic brain injury.

Even though it is not necessary that cerebral palsy exists due to medical error, still following proper medical standards could prevent a child’s brain from getting deprived of oxygen. The injury has caused disability, pain and sustained disfigurement in Sophia and she will never be a normal person again.

The parents of Sophia have filed a birth injury lawsuit against Dr. Michael E. Herrmann and Memorial Hospital in St. Clair County Circuit Court and had claimed the compensation of $150,000 in addition to the costs.

Cerebral palsy is a chronic condition that affects muscle coordination and restricts body movements. The average lifetime cost for single person with cerebral palsy is $921,000.
