Magee-Womens Research Institute would be launching a new program that would help in saving the fertility of patients suffering from cancer and other diseases. Many cancer treatments save the lives of patients but destroy their fertility. Young adults have many alternatives such as banking some sperms, freeze embryos or eggs but children who have not attained puberty don't have any such option. The fertility program focuses on such boys and girls who have not attained the age of puberty.
The program has been designed for the patients of both the sexes and all ages. The researchers say that the program would prevent the patients from losing their fertility due to cancer treatment. The method would involve freezing of the testicular and ovarian tissue, which would be transplanted again in patients.
The cost of the fertility procedure can range from $4,000 to $12,000 and would be by grant money from the Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation and the Scaife Foundation.
The researchers says that the new program would be suitable for the patients of cancers and immunological conditions that require bone marrow transplants as these patients are at high risk of becoming infertile.
