A Weight Loss Program Might Help in Reducing Depression

ObesityAccording to a latest review, obese people who choose to go for a weight loss program based on exercise and lifestyle changes are less depressed about their condition, though experts don’t have a clue whether weight loss played any crucial role in itself.

Many studies have been associating obesity with several medical conditions and depression has been one of them. Some studies suggest that by losing even a small percentage of their body weight, heavy people can improve their physical and mental health, even if they remain obese.

Some of the medicines for weight loss have also been associated with the increased rate of depression and suicidal tendencies.

Dr. Anthony Fabricatore, whose findings appeared in the International Journal of Obesity, said, “The new report doesn’t want to imply that weight loss is a substitute for treatment of clinically significant depression. But for people who have some symptoms of depression and are overweight (or) obese, there's some relief that comes with weight loss”.

The researcher reviewed 31 previous studies related to weight loss in a structured program and changes in symptoms of depression and they found that people in almost every kind of weight loss program showed improvements in their mood.
