Providing a ray of hope for the Lupus patients, who were till now living in the dark, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now approved a new drug that is intended to relieve the people suffering from the same.
It was previously found that Benlysta is very much capable of reducing the pain and symptoms triggered by Lupus that includes joint pain, light sensitivity, fever, chest pain, hair loss fatigue etc.
The condition, which mainly hits women, has its root cause in the abnormal growth of B cells in the body.
Benlysta targets the same fact and inhibits their growth, once injected in the veins of the patient.
For long, it was debatable whether the drug should be given a certification to treat this disease, which has some 1 million victims in US alone.
The Director of the Office of Drug Evaluation II in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Dr. Curtis Rosebraugh, said, "Benlysta, when used with existing therapies, may be an important new treatment approach for health-care professionals and patients looking to help manage symptoms associated with this disease”.
The decision has been welcomed by the Lupus Foundation of America. Although, the disease is not relied as a ‘magic-bullet’ but it is believed that with its certification, new clinical advancements can be expected for the same.
