According to a new research in Australia, there has been the discovery of new biomarkers that can help in the diagnosis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma.
Biomarkers can be used in different combinations, for the successful identification of patients with the types of airway diseases. When the research was under process, Proteomics, which is an emerging field of Science, had been relied upon. This science focuses on the functions and the structure of the proteins of an organism.
"Using a proteomics approach, we have identified a panel of four blood-based biomarkers that, when used in combination, can discriminate between healthy controls, asthmatics and individuals with COPD, and has the potential to be a valuable tool in the clinical diagnosis of respiratory disease", said Peter G. Gibson, conjoint professor at the University of Newcastle's School of Medicine and Public Health.
The protein content in the Biomarker panel is concerned with the regulatory process of inflammation and is usually used as anti-inflammatory treatments.
He also said that these results have been made clear after a second test on older adults suffering from respiratory ailments.
