Each year, more than 1,500 people are referred to renal specialists after they find out they have some sort of kidney problem. World Kidney Day raises awareness about the affect of kidney health on the health of the body as a whole.
According to statistics released in January 2011, 532 people in the nation have ESRD (end stage renal disease). Of them, 501 are on dialysis and the remaining 31 have received a transplant.
The Minister of Health said, "Though the number looks small, it is of great concern because each year there are around over 100 new patients requiring dialysis treatment. The numbers are expected to increase if we don't act together to increase measures in preventing the disease".
The theme of World Kidney Day is "Protect your kidneys, save your heart" because those with chronic renal disease carry double the risk of having heart diseases as well. To raise awareness, the Ministry of Health is organising events to educate the public to share the information of the problem of this type of disease in the country. This awareness is especially important because many sufferers of kidney disease feel no symptoms and there is no medicine that can repair the damage that has been done except for a transplant.
