The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has been fighting for the ban of polycarbonate milk bottles used to feed new born babies. The polycarbonate milk bottles have a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). This is extremely harmful for the new born. The association has been fighting for the cause since 1998.
The government has agreed and decided to ban the product. The ban will be applicable from March 1 next year. The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) and the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) are not satisfied with the decision. They believe that the ban should be applicable immediately. They do not agree with the Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai giving retailers an entire year to stop the sale of polycarbonate milk bottles.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical. It is more commonly known as environmental hormones. The chemical has the capability of disturbing hormone-secreting glands that form the endocrine system which comprises of thyroid, pituitary, pancreas, thymus, adrenal, ovaries and testical glands.
It is advised that a person should only use metal or glass bottles to feed their babies. They should immediately throw away the plastic bottles as they can be extremely harmful for the health of the infant.
