A recently conducted study has reported that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) like Prozac can help in the treatment of conditions like anxiety and depression. The study that has come out with these conclusions was carried out to check the physiological effects of SSRIs.
It was also reported that such medications also help in providing treatment of conditions like the Alzheimer’s disease and particularly helps in treating symptoms of the disease like loss of memory and disorientation. According to the researchers involved in the study, the drug affects the hippocampus of the brain that provides long-term memory and spatial awareness.
The study was carried out by experts at the Department of Pharmacology, Nippon Medical School, who found that granule cells of adult mice treated with fluoxetine changed with the passage of some time. It needs to be kept in mind that fluoxetine happens to be the most common neuronal cell present in the hippocampus of people and they are connected to other neuronal cells as well.
After receiving the medication for continuous period of time, the granule cells seemed to go through a serotonin enforced anti-ageing process. This converted the cells into an immature state from the adult-cell type plasticity.
