On Tuesday, the US Federal Agents arrested as many as 26 suspects from a total of 3 states, over their alleged involvement in a major Medicare fraud worth a whopping $61 Million. Suspects arrested include doctors and nurses as well, and were taken into custody in Miami, Brooklyn and Detroit.
Also included in the arrested is a Florida doctor who has been accused of operating a $40 Million home healthcare facility which falsely listed patients as "blind diabetics" so that he could bill the center for "twice-daily nurse visits".
Indictments were initially issued for 32 people in all, but the arrest status of others is not known as yet.
According to information shared by the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, all the suspects involved lined up false patients and billed Medicare for medical equipment that was not required, physical therapy and HIV infections.
"No matter what type of fraud is committed, there is one common denominator and that denominator is greed. Medicare fraud is not a victimless crime. It hurts every American taxpayer by raising the cost of health care", said Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.
