The danger of getting exposed to the nuclear radiation from Japan is looming all over the United States. People have been panicked and they are trying to find a possible way out. To stay protected from the effects of radiation, they have started to take potassium iodide without any professional consultation.
A leading health specialist, Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, Director of the Los Angeles County Public Health, has expressed his concerns over the matter and warned that unsystematic intake of potassium iodide is risky at the present environmental condition as it is injurious to the health. It may lead to dangerous side effects also.
The doctor has explained that there can be various kind of side effects including, vomiting, intestinal trouble, rashes, irritation or inflammation of the salivary glands and acute allergic reactions.
He further informed that the nuclear disaster that took place in Japan, will not lead to instant dangerous effect to the United States. So taking excessive potassium iodide as a safeguard is not a wise act. If such kind of situation arises, when intake of potassium iodide will be considered as a protection against the radiation then, definitely the Los Angeles County Public Health Department and other federal agencies will take the responsibility to inform the people.
