AT&T, Verizon & Time Warner offering free calls to quake-hit JapanShowing their generosity, several US network providers are offering long distance calls and texts to quake-hit Japan for free.

Digital home phone service provider Time Warner and wireless providers like AT&T and Verizon reported in releases that they were allowing US residents to contact their near & dear ones in Japan free of cost. AT&T was the first to announce free calls and text messages to Japan. AT&T customers in the US will not be charged for making long distance calls and send text messages to Japan through the end of March.

Announcing the free service, AT&T said in a statement, “We want to help our customers connect with loved ones in Japan in anyway we can.”

Other network provider, Verizon, is also not charging its prepaid customers for making long distance calls, and text & multimedia messages to Japan until April 10. Meanwhile, Time Warner announced that it would not charge its digital phone customers for making calls to Japan until April 15.

Japan suffered widespread disaster following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami on last Friday.
