Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has announced that the company would not work with hobbyist or so-called garage developers.
A garage game developer is a developer who develops a title without a team and then cashes that title by going with a more established developer.
Rovio, the developer of popular game Angry Birds, had started as a garage developer. Angry Birds has already been downloaded more than 100 million times. Currently, it has more than 40 million users around the globe.
But in an interview with Gamasutra, Fils-Aime said, “We are not looking to do business today with the garage developer. In our view, that's not a business we want to pursue.”
Nintendo’s move will disqualify App Store game Tiny Wings’ producer Andreas Illiger from appearing on Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo America will release the $250 handheld games console 3DS on 27th of March. The 3DS allows users to enjoy 3D content without the need to wear special glasses. However, Nintendo won’t make its online shop for downloadable games available in the country until late May, which might limit its potential audience.
