In a shocking case of animal neglect, it has been revealed that six horses were left to die and yet another three surrendered to the SPCA in the northern Wairarapa.
These horses were found on a farm last week. It was in Pahiatua last week that some concerned residents informed the SPCA about it so that they could come and take some action against it.
The president of the SPCA, Val Ball, an Animal Welfare Inspector and a veterinarian, visited the farm on Wednesday and examined the situation.
According to Ms. Ball, the situation was very bad and the horses were left to squander around due to lack of attention. There were a total of 19 horses in the farm last year, but most of them died due to ill treatment and neglect.
Even the corpses of the dead horses had not been disposed of, one of them was found in the river. The horses had died due to malnutrition and neglect. The three remaining ones were surrendered to the SPCA.
"It's a case of inadequate care and attention. I'm not sure that the owner was even aware that he had so many dead horses on his land”, she said.
