Mobile app maker Snaptu acquired by Facebook

SnaptuIsraeli mobile app developer Snaptu has reportedly been snapped up by the world’s leading social-networking platform, Facebook, for an estimated $70 million.

The acquisition will help Facebook expand its mobile services. The social platform has been increasingly concentrating on expanding its mobile phone services for its network of more than half-a-billion members.

As per Snaptu’s claims, its lower-end Facebook app that was rolled out in January 2011 works across 2,500 different mobile devices globally, covering as much as 80 per cent of all mobile devices sold. Snaptu is available for free to download, but users are required to bear any data fees linked with accessing the app.

In a press release, Snaptu said that it expected the acquisition to complete within a few weeks, and that the company would continue working hard to present a richer & more advanced Facebook app on virtually every handset.

Speaking on the deal, the company added, “During this transition period, we expect Snaptu will continue to operate as it does today.”

Snaptu was created in 2007, with an objective to provide innovative & useful services mobile phone users who don’t have access to advanced smartphones.
