The World Salt Awareness Week is celebrated from March 21 to 27, 2011, which is sponsored by the World Action on Salt and Health (WASH), and the theme of the awareness week is "Salt and Men's Health". On the occasion of awareness week, the Food and Grocery Council CEO, Katherine Rich, revealed that food Companies have removed many hundreds of tons of salt from their food products.
Ms. Rich said that food Companies have been working on food reduction from last so many years. She said that many people consume too much salt, which leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD); this awareness week will draw attention towards the use of lower salt products.
According to a recent research, CVD is responsible for 29% of deaths in men, more men die of CVD in comparison to women. The research also revealed that on average men consume more salt than women and they have higher blood pressure. Significantly, men are less likely to take action to reduce their blood pressure.
According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), an average American consumes around 3,400 milligrams of sodium, which is double of the recommended limit.
Salt is made up of sodium chloride and food Companies are reducing sodium in the salt.
