There is a meeting confirmed between Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. The meeting will be held on Tuesday. The main agenda of the meeting will be polio eradication and providing better medical facilities for children and mothers.
Bill and Melinda Gates will be meeting certain policy-makers, non-government partners, businessmen and community leaders. They are expected in India this week.
There is no doubt that the country has managed to improve the medical facilities available but there is still a lot to be done. The burden of Polio cases has been reduced by 95%. There were 741 cases of polio reported in the country during 2009. Last year only 42 cases of polio were reported.
Both Bill and Melinda Gates want to assure that the vaccination programmes are intensified. They also want the government of India to take every required step to improve the condition of the medical facility provided in the country. They believe that the country still needs to work on the availability of medical facilities especially for the people living below the poverty line. During the visit they also plan to meet health workers in Bihar.
They also want to deal with the problem of malnutrition in children and mothers. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have assured that they will take every step required to improve the medical facilities available in India.
