MDR-TB: Bone of Contention for World

Bone of Contention for WorldThere is an apparent furor over the rising tuberculosis cases across major economies of the world. As per a report, a large gathering of global organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Stop TB Partnership was seen actively participating in the World TB Day.

Though there is a sense of urgency in many countries, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reportedly unveiled that the United States has recorded a 3.9% drop in TB cases as compared to 11.9% drop in 2009.

Shockingly, a group of four nations in the US, including California, Texas, New York and Florida, accounted for 49.2% of the reported cases. Medical experts believe a full cycle of six to nine months is required to shove off the culprit bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Moreover, a survey has revealed 113 cases of so-called multidrug-resistant TB, which is highly resistive to multiple antibiotics. In the wake of addressing the percolating issue, WHO has appealed the countries to notch up their strategic steps to root out the cause of MDR-TB.

Meanwhile, a significant rise in the cost of treatment of MDR-TB has pushed the percolating concern of WHO as countries will have to bear the burden of MDR-TB programme for their countries.
