Recently, a report was issued by the City Health Department after examining 42,353 men and women at the Social Hygiene Clinic last year and it found 20% of people positive for different kinds of diseases acquired through sex.
It also highlighted that most of them were women who were working as commercial sex workers and entertainers in nightclubs.
After examining 4,061 females and 107 males, researchers found them to have non-specific infections whereas 1,187 women were found to be infected by bacterial vaginosis.
The researchers also found 177 females and 72 males afflicted with gonorrhea and the rest suffered from trichomoniasis, genital warts, herpes, syphilis, hepatitis B and parasites.
Dr. Ilya Tac-an, STD/HIV/AIDS Coordinator said, “The non-specific infections may be chlamydia but they don’t have the capability to confirm that kind of disease. All their clients were treated right after they were found to have STDs. Viral infections such as genital warts and herpes can be cauterized but the lesion remain and may appear again”.
She added that there were chances that the actual number of afflicted person was lower as these figures were based on the visits and not on the number of persons examined.
