Barnes & Noble on Friday announced that it would roll out a "major update" for its Nook e-reader in spring this year, to allow users to enjoy new features like emails and new apps.
The list of new feature to come with the potential update includes Drawing Pad, Tikatok, Lonely Planet Phrasebook, Wine PhD and Finnish game developers Rovio’s highly-admired Angry Birds game.
In addition, the update will bring new magazines and e-book content from Nickelodeon.
The popular bookstore chain’s deal with Nickelodeon will allow users of the Nook Color/Nook Kids will be able to have access to digital books featuring well-liked Nickelodeon characters such as Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob Square Pants.
The Nook Newsstand will include options like The Economist, ESPN, Travel + Leisure, The Magazine, Food & Wine, PC Gamer and Saveur. The total number of available periodicals will now be more than 135.
Separately, Microsoft has asked the US International Trade Commission to ban imports of Android-based Nook e-reader, claming that the device infringes its software.
