In a major breakthrough, some doctors from Singapore have developed a new non-invasive treatment option for prostate cancer patients and they believe that it helps in minimizing the side effects along with reducing the treatment time.
Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Center Singapore conducted phase one of the trials of this treatment in which seven patients with low-risk prostate cancer were included and the results of initial trials show that the non-invasive ultrasound method might lead to some complications.
The cases of prostate cancer in Singapore have soared up to four times in last 30 years and patients have been resorting to treatment options like surgical removal of the prostate gland and radiation therapy.
But, this new treatment would allow the patients to get back to their normal routine within a couple of days of treatment whereas in contemporary treatments, patients have to wait for about two weeks for radical operations.
Kwek Jin Wei, Senior Consultant Radiologist for National Cancer Center Singapore, said, “When we treat, we are treating only the part of the gland with the cancer as opposed to the conventional treating methods like surgery or radical prostatectomy where the patients undergo surgery to remove the whole gland”.
