These days, companies tend to charge huge “rip off” surcharges from the consumers on their payments made by debit or credit card. In this regard, aiming to stamp out such spiraling surcharges, the Consumer organization Which? has lodged a super complaint with the Office of Fair Trading.
According to the recent report prepared by Which?, there exist many budget airlines that in lieu of proving passengers with the privilege of paying by plastic money, charge hefty fees from them. But in real these charges are "unjustifiable" charges. Which? reported that for processing a payment made by plastic card, the cost to companies is around 20p which is no more than 2% of the transaction value for a credit card. But dozens of companies charge higher fees.
At the same time, this plastic game has increasingly become a standard practice across a wide range of business sectors. Let it be local councils, florists, dentists, dealerships or estate agents; all pertain to similar business pattern.
Due to such extra charges, it becomes difficult for the customer to pay prices ahead of making a purchase, but then it is not the bank or card issuer who is responsible for this. According to Which? it is basically the retailers that try and cheat both the parties.
