Shortage of Surgeons in South Africa

Shortage of Surgeons in South AfricaThe medical organizations in South Africa are going through difficult times. The authorities have been facing numerous problems to provide medical facilities for people. One of the major concerns is the critical shortage of surgeons in the public sector.

The authorities require around four times more than the current available surgeons. As confirmed by Professor Martin Veller, Chairman of the Association of Surgeons in SA and head of the department of surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, there are only thirty general surgeons trained every year in the country. However, to meet the current surgery demands at least 120 surgeons should be trained every year.

As estimated by the authorities, they require around 1,000 general surgeons to handle the current shortage. They believe that the government should start new procedures to encourage people in becoming surgeons and staying in the country.

It has been seen that women do not want to become surgeons. They believe that this field of work is only for men. If the authorities want to solve the issue of the shortage, they need to clear this misconception. Women feel that they cannot manage the odd working hours of a surgeon.

The authorities have proposed several new ideas to help women understand the benefits and possibilities of becoming a surgeon.
