A breakthrough study has been made in the field of hepatitis C virus. As per the study, a combined therapy of two drugs namely boceprevir and telaprevir can prove to be highly effective for the patients of hepatitis C virus.
If statistics are to be believed, over 3.5 million Americans are suffering from hepatitis C virus and more are expected to follow the same route.
Responding to the study, Dr. Mark Levstik, Associate Professor in the department of medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London, claimed that about 60% of the patients are left unaffected with the current therapies.
With the success rate of the dual therapy, many experts believe that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will soon approve the drugs for medical practice.
The study asserted that inclusion of boceprevir can lead to decrease in risk of infection by a massive 66% in comparison to those who are not treated with the same two drugs. The most satisfying part is that the culprit virus does not re-enter the body and further keeps many disease at bay.
Though the study has been appreciated highly by many hepatitis specialists of medical fraternity, the potential risk of side effects of the dual therapy is still looming over the head.
