Eating Fish May Give You Stronger Bones

Eating Fish May Give You Stronger BonesEating fish could help fight osteoporosis among older adults as a new study has found that older people with high intake of fish are able to preserve their bone density better as compared to people who don’t consume much fish.

There is no concrete evidence that relates fish-eating habits to bone strengthening but it’s considered by researchers that various oils present in fish prevent bones from losing mass over time.

Dr. Katherine Tucker, a Northeastern University Professor and lead researcher who had undertaken the study, said even though it appears that omega 3 fatty acid plays significant role in bone mass preservation, it may not be as plain as increasing dietary intake of omega 3 fats to curb bone mass loss.

The research was not able to establish nature of relation between fish and bone mass loss but could only reveal the existence of some co-relation. Researchers also found that it’s not only just omega 3 fatty acid but also omega 6 fatty acid that is beneficial for bones. Omega 6 fatty acid, also known as arachidonic acid, was found beneficial only in case it’s consumed with high level of omega 3 fats.

Dr. Katherine Tucker said that it seems that both type of fats should be taken in balance as absence of any one will cease the benefits.
