Security firm Symantec has found Android threat in the form of an illegitimately copied version of a legitimate app called “Walk and Text”.
The pirated version of the “Walk and Text” is infected with a kind of malware that is designed to push out a misspelled SMS to the entire target’s contact list saying, “Hey, just downloaded a pirated App off Internet, Walk and Text for Android. Im stupid and cheap, it costed only 1 buck. Don't steal it like I did!”
“Walk and Text” allows smartphone users to see what is in front of them while they are walking and writing text through the phone’s camera.
Previously, Google had to remove more than 50 applications from its Android Market because of malware infection. But unlike the previous malware threats, the latest threat didn’t emerge from the Android Market. It emerged in the form of an illegitimately copied version of a genuine application.
The new threat highlights the need for users to be cautious about where they are downloading their mobile applications from. Users frequently opt for pirated software as it is often presented for free.
