Since her plastic surgeon performed a blepharoplasty on her eyelids, Marilyn Leisz, a married woman from New Jersey with two children, is unable to close her eyes. On Wednesday, her case against her doctor landed her $115,000 as the jury decided on, which Mrs. Leisz considered a joke because of the things she has to do on a constant basis to deal with protecting her eyes. She says she expected an amount closer to $500,000, and that the jury didn’t take into consideration how the result of the surgery has affected her quality of life.
In the past, Leisz had two other eye surgeries to deal with a condition called ptosis, which happens when facial muscles aren’t strong enough to hold up the eyelids, resulting in droopy eyes. “I was satisfied with the results”, she said. “But he told me that I could not see what he could see, and I’d be very unhappy with the way I looked in a few years. He told me I needed surgery… He’s the doctor… You’re supposed to count on your doctor that they’re being honest and truthful and not worrying about their own pocketbook”.
Since her surgery, Leisz has to use drops and steroids to lubricate her eyes, and she wears a mask at night so her corneas don’t get scratched. Because her eyes now experience overexposure to the environment, she is at a higher risk of both glaucoma and blindness.
