A study led by Dr. Joe Vinson from University of Scranton in Pennsylvania in the US has revealed that walnuts improve one’s health. The study has suggested that “consumers should eat more walnuts as part of a healthy diet”. The study has also revealed that nuts taken in regular diets can reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and type-2 diabetes.
In the study, the scientists analyzed the antioxidant content of nine different types of popular nut, including walnuts, almonds and peanuts. During the study, Dr. Vinson’s team found that walnuts not only had more antioxidants than other nuts, but that they contained more powerful kinds, helping fight the effects of harmful molecules. These findings were presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, California. The study ranked walnuts above peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and other nuts.
Tree and ground nuts are believed to be one of the nature’s most perfect readymade foods containing high level of protective antioxidants that counters the effects of harmful molecules. The study has revealed that a handful of walnuts contain almost twice as much antioxidant as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut. The study has suggested that consumer should have at least seven walnuts a day to keep themselves healthier.
