Extra Blood Donations Needed Over Coming Months to Combat Townsville Dengue Outb

Over the coming 3 months, as has been confirmed by the organization, the Red Cross Blood Service would be requiring extra donations to combat with the problem of serious outbreak of dengue fever in the Townsville area.

Blood banks across the area have stopped accepting red cells and platelet donations amidst rising concerns about the outbreak. So far, 11 confirmed cases of dengue have occurred in Townsville.

Fearing that the restriction in this particular area could affect the entire state, Mackay Donor Centre manager Karen Ashman said, "It has actually restricted the collection of the red cells and the platelets and Townsville being our biggest regional centre outside of Brisbane, it's having a serious impact on the blood collections across the entire state. So for Mackay I guess we are asking the Mackay donors to support our region and also the rest of Queensland in coming in and giving blood".

As confirmed by the Queensland Health medical officer Dr Steven Donohue, there are two separate strains spread across the city, followed by a fresh outbreak last month alone, and these factors have managed to raises the concerns even further.
