Cablevision has launched a new iPad app, called Optimum, to allow users to have complete TV experience on the tablet.
The new app brings every TV program that is available to subscribers of the Cablevision to the iPad for free. Currently, there are as many as 300 channels and around 2,000 on-demand programs available to cablevision subscribers.
Time Warner also launched a similar service recently, but unlike Time Warner's app, the Cablevision’s app doesn’t stream content over the Internet. It, instead, uses its own cable network connection to stream content to the subscriber's home. The iPad uses the home's WiFi connection to receive the program content from the Cablevision modem.
But, the launch of iPad app by Cablevision has been opposed by companies that create media products. Channels owner want distributors like Cablevision to make extra payments for streaming their content over iPad as they believe that the iPad constitutes a new distribution channel.
In response, Cablevision said, “Cablevision has the right to distribute programming over its cable system to iPads configured in this way under its existing distribution agreements with programming providers.”
Cablevision’s Optimum app for the iPad can be downloaded from Apple App Store for free.
