Android surpasses all rival platforms in US

Android surpasses all rival platforms in USGoogle's Android operating system has surpassed all of its rival platforms including RIM and iPhone, a fresh study carried out by ComScore claims.

According to the study, Android’s market share jumped 7 percentage points from 26 per cent to 33 per cent during a period of three months, between November 2010 and February 2011 in the US market.

Android’s biggest rival RIM suffered a drop of 4.6 percentage points, from 33.5 per cent to 28.9 per cent.

Software giant Microsoft's market share slipped from 9 per cent to 7.7 per cent, while Palm's share slipped 1.1 percentage points, from 3.9 per cent to 2.8 per cent during the same period.

The main reason behind Android’s success is that it is being used by several manufacturers. A number of manufacturers roll out Android-based new devices every now and then. On the other hand, rivals like RIM and Apple do not introduced new devices based on the respective platforms frequently.

As for the device manufacturers themselves, Samsung emerged at the top with 24.8 per cent of US consumers claiming to have a Samsung-made device. LG grabbed the second spot with 20.9 per cent in terms of actual hardware sales, while Motorola, RIM and Apple accounted for 16.1 per cent, 8.6 per cent and 7.5 per cent of the hardware market.
