Russian spaceship “Gagarin” docks at ISS

Russian spaceship “Gagarin” docks at ISSRussian spaceship Soyuz TMA-21, nicknamed "Gagarin," docked at the International Space Station (ISS) at 7:09 p. m. EDT on 6th of April, Wednesday.

The "Gagarin," which blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 4th of April, Monday, has been nicknamed after famous cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who was the first person in space on 2nd of April, 1961.

Gagarin's name will always be remembered for his initiative, but he himself died unfortunately at a very young age. During a military training exercise in 1968, Gagarin's plane crashed, killing him at the age of 34.

The "Gagarin" delivered three two Russian cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut to ISS, bringing the total number of crewmembers at the orbiting observatory to six.

Speaking on the flight, NASA astronaut Ron Garan said, "It was a great couple of days and we're ready to get to work."

Separately, NASA announced that the ISS will be the focus of the US human space program for the next ten years and it will be the first step in preparation for manned flights to Mars.
