The government has planned to introduce a universal health insurance system in the country. The Department of Finance has suggested that the new system will shoot up the public healthcare costs. The Minister of Health, James Reilly has rejected the suggestions of the Department of Finance.

Health Department believes that insurance program would be beneficial for the citizens of the country. There are many health complications which are beyond the control of a person. Many lifestyle choices can also have an adverse effect on a person’s health.

The insurance company would be in a better position to decide who need what kind of insurance. The company would be helpful in the case any medical emergency. Keeping a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol and having a good driving record can have a positive impact on the insurance premiums.

Reilly claims that these insurance programs would help in cutting the cost of health care across primary care and secondary care both in terms of hospital costs, consultant costs and GP costs.
