A recent study conducted by the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in Winston-Salem, North Carolina has unveiled the fact that hookah culture is becoming highly popular among the American youngsters.
Hookah is commonly known as hubbly bubbly and is a tall, ornate water pipe. A number of hookah cafes and bars are present across the country which offers a wide variety of hookah to lure the customers. Some hookah hubs also offers flavored hookah often mixed with fruit, molasses and herbs to add flavor.
Majority of the youngsters falsely believe that hookah tobacco is safer than commercial cigarettes. This is because it contains lower tar, nicotine levels and the water filtration.
Researchers conducted a survey on 3,770 students at eight North Carolina colleges and universities to analyze their smoking habits. The research of the survey revealed that 40% of the students smoked tobacco from a hookah, while nearly 47% smoked a cigarette.
Nearly 22% of the students said that they have smoked hookah but had never smoked a cigarette. The survey concluded that most of the hookah smokers do not shift to other products such as cigarettes, cigars or smokeless tobacco.
