India Has Maximum Number of Stillbirths: The Lancet

The LancetAn aboriginal Canadian or Australian woman is more likely to suffer from the trauma of a stillborn baby in comparison to their non-aboriginal counterparts, as per the British medical journal 'The Lancet'. The finding has sent shockers in the developing nations, including India, Pakistan, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, Congo, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Afghanistan and Tanzania, which are already struggling to open the Gordian knot of stillbirths.

With the first issue of ‘The Lancet’ about the prevalence of ‘Superbug’ in Indian drinking water, reverberating the contours of the Indian Government, this recent report revealed that India has the most number of stillbirths among all the developing countries of the world.

With 66% of total stillbirths reported in developing countries, the study has expressed grave concern over the structure of the public health policies laid down by the governments of these questioned countries.

Responding to the crumbling situation of maternity health care, J. Frederik, Author, The Lancet, claimed, "Typical complications of pregnancy, hypertension diabetes are still killing a lot of babies in low-income countries. Infections like malaria and syphilis still affecting many babies world over-third group”.

As India is grappling to absorb the shock of skewed sex ratio, this collaborative study has jolted the Indian turf.
