An anti-fluoride campaigner of United States, Prof. Paul Connett has urged that more government-funded research is required to investigate health concerns arising from fluoridation of water supply. Prof. Connett is an Environmental Chemist, of St Lawrence University, New York and is also the director of the International Fluoride Action Network, and lead author of The ‘Case against Fluoride’.
He said that some previous studies, including many of them from New Zealand have shown that fluoridation of water supply has slightly reduced dental-health problems among people. New Zealand is one of the only eight countries in the developed world where more than 50% of the public water supply is fluoridated.
Internet site of New Zealand Ministry of Health says that about $500 million a year was spent in treating dental problems in New Zealand every year. They believe that Fluoridation and a healthy diet are the most cost-effective ways to prevent oral health problems.
However, many studies have suggested that fluoridation has reduced IQ levels among young people. Some studies have also raised concerns about potentially adverse effects on brain and bone health.
