The BBC-supported IPTV venture, YouView, released more technical specifications of the upcoming set-top boxes that will allow users to watch online catch-up and on-demand services.
The YouView set-top boxes will run on the Linux operating system and bring half GB of RAM and 320GB of memory. Each of the set-top boxes will feature two USB ports, probably one HDMI, an Ethernet port and support for
802.11n Wi-Fi.
Announcing the details of the service’s set-top boxes, YouView Chief Executive Richard Halton, “We're delighted to confirm the final launch specification for YouView to help any manufacturer develop a connected TV device.”
The set top boxes will be produced by Cisco, Technicolor, Humax, Manhattan, Pace, Huawei and Vestel. YouView said that every manufacturer will offer its own remote so the remotes will not be interoperable.
YouView, which was previously called Project Canvas, has suffered repeated delays due to some persistent hardware issues. The list of service’s partners includes the BBC, ITV, BT, TalkTalk, Arqiva, Channel 4 and Five.
