A 28-year-old New Zealander who was suffering from depression cut off his finger and cooked it with vegetables before eating it. The patient was suffering from depression since 2008. He was also suffering from insomnia and suicidal thoughts. The case was reported by two South Island health professionals in the Australasian Psychiatry journal.
The man was thinking of cutting his little finger from past many days and eventually he chopped it. The report says that initially he felt excitement and a sense of relief about it but later regretted it. The authors of the report say that his violent thoughts provided relief from intense emotional stress, and gave him a sense of control.
The report reveals that it was only his depression which led him to self-cannibalism. The authors have warned the colleagues against this rare behavior which could lead to self-destruction.
