According to a new study done by the Translational Genomics Research Institute, a non-profit biomedical research group, it has been revealed that the level of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. Aureus) in meat found at the US stores is very high.
The Food and Drug Administration is already aware of the research and they said that they are working on the same study with the U. S. Agriculture Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
However, the head of the research said that that if handled and cooked safely, the meat is good for the health of consumers.
The study was led by Dr. Lance Price, who tested 136 samples of meat from 26 different grocery stores at Florida, Arizona, Illinois, California and Washington DC. The Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming, which is against the daily use of the antibiotics in animal feed, funded the research
Dr. Price said that the bacteria, Staph, found in the meat, causes infections in the US every year.
Price said, "It causes a whole slew of infections ranging from skin infections to really bad respiratory infections like pneumonia".
The study revealed that meat contains 47% of the Staphylococcus aureus, which cause the Staph virus.
