Recreating the process of formation of ovarian cancer in the lab, US researchers are ready to prove that the tumors start developing in the fallopian tubes but not in the ovaries.
Experts believe that the findings of this study will surely help to find new ways to fight ovarian cancer which has no early symptoms and by the time it does, it becomes impossible to stop the growth of the tumor.
Several studies have been conducted to find out the origin of the cancer but the latest research by scientists at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston is the first study to show how the cancer takes root first in fallopian tissue.
Experts believe that the findings of this study will surely help in creating new ways to the treatment of the malignant disease as this is known to be the fifth deadliest cancer among women, taking 115,000 lives on an average each year.
The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the lead author, Ronny Drapkin, stated, “Like true tumor cells, these 'artificial' cancer cells proliferated rapidly and were able to leave their home tissue and grow elsewhere. When implanted in laboratory animals, they also gave rise to tumors that were structurally, behaviorally and genomically”.
