Mascara on Contact Lenses Might Cause Eye Discomfort and Irritation

Ciba-VisionRecently, a Nielsen survey of more than 500 women was conducted by the contact lens maker Ciba Vision in which women of age 15 to 39 were asked about the problems they face during the usage of contact lenses.

The results of the survey showed that six in ten Singaporean women who used contact lenses had suffered major irritation and discomfort in their eyes after they accidently put beauty products like mascara on their lenses.

Ophthalmologist Natasha Lim works at Wheelock Place and she agrees to the fact that eye discomfort and irritation have become common problems for women who wear lenses as most of the women use it as part of the fashion along with lots of eye make-up.

Dr. Leo Seo Wei, a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, is of the belief that the rising trend of silicone hydrogel has made the problem worse as these new lenses absorb more oil in comparison to the older hydrogel lenses.

Samuel Okungbowa, an optician at Crystal Eye Clinic, stated, “My clients like contact lenses because they are not bogus and they can maintain a low profile by choosing neutral colors. They are lighter, stick to the eyes correctly and give comfort compare to glasses”.
