Sony’s upcoming S1 and S2 tablets

Sony-AppleThe number of Apple iPad’s rivals is increasing every so often, but so far no tablet could make a dent in the iPad’s popularity.

Electronic giant Sony introduced its two tablets, called S1 and S2, which will be rolled out sometime in the autumn.

The S1, which looks similar to Apple’s popular iPad, runs Google’s Android operating system. Having a 9.4-inch touch-screen, and designed like a typical tablet, the S1 tapers down from thicker side.

Like S1, the S2 tablet also runs Google’s Android operating system. But, it is a radical two-screen tablet (each screen measures 5.5 inches) that can be folded up.

The S2 can be used as a TV remote control and to access Sony’s film and TV download service.

Both the tablets will offer wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi or high-speed mobile phone services.

The company neither specified mobile carriers for its tablet, not it disclosed their pricing. It only said that the devices would be "competitive."

Announcing its upcoming tablets, the Japanese electronics manufacturer said it aimed to grab the top spot in the list of seller of Android-based tablets by next year.

The tablet market is currently being dominated by the iPad, which is expected to account for 70-80 per cent of market share in 2011.
