The UK's Medical Research Council and the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership sponsored a trail that was intended to test the safety and efficacy of the vaccine among the infants, injected with the modified vaccine virus Ankara (MVA. HIVA). The vaccine contains small particles of the HIV genes but not able to cause HIV as it does not contain the whole virus, claimed the experts.
The Kenya AIDS Vaccine proposal has enrolled approximately 72 infants and analyzed them for whole one year whereas in Gambia, 48 infants were marked for the participation in the trail. Through the trail, infants of healthy HIV-negative and HIV-positive mothers were injected with the MVA. HIVA.
"Half of the children in the study received both the trial vaccine together with the routine immunization while another half only received their regular vaccine. This is meant to help compare the infants vaccinated with the trial vaccine and those who haven't received it on their immune response”, said the lead researcher of the study, Walter Jaoko.
Around half of the children were treated with both of the trial vaccines along with the routine immunization and rest of the subjects were injected with the regular vaccine and afterwards compared for the trail vaccine results.
