Technology giant Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) Enterprise Services Division has bagged a $2.5 billion multi-year contract to provide technology services to NASA.
Under the terms of the contract, HP will provide NASA with desktop services and devices over a base period of four years, with an additional two three-year optional periods.
HP will update NASA's whole end-user infrastructure under the program, which will be a part of the NASA Agency Consolidated End-User Service (ACES) program, covering as many as 60,000 users.
NASA uses IT to support its core business, computational activities and scientific research. Commenting on the contract, Michael Sweigart from NASA said, "HP will provide, manage, secure and maintain these essential IT services for the agency."
The deal is the latest sign of lift in the government spending, following the past recession that had forced the government agencies to slash spending drastically.
Meanwhile, NASA is prepping for the Space Shuttle Endeavour's launch that is slated for Friday. Endeavour's launch is expected to be attended by US President Obama and shuttle commander Mark Kelly's wife Gabrelle Giffords, the US representative who has been recuperating at a Houston rehab center following she was shot in the head in Arizona.
