Revealing the shocking costs for the treatment of asthma, Ministry of Health has stated that it cost $1121 a day to treat a patient of asthma in hospital.
According to the Asthma Foundation's President Professor Ian Town, it was one of the several ways in which Asthma cost Aotearoa dearly.
Highlighting the financial implications going much wider, Professor Town said, "The costs of asthma hospitalizations were at least $17 million in 2009/2010. If you want to take into account the wider financial implications, you also have to consider, for example, the days lost off school and work. These figures increase the costs of asthma hugely".
In addition, he believed that the worst part was when children had to suffer the wrath of the malignant disease which has become the leading reason for hospital admissions in age group of children under 5 in New Zealand.
He also urged all the people in the country to use preventer medication regularly in order to avoid the disease before it got out of control.
The Asthma Foundation also recommended everyone with the disease to get a free flu jab in the wake of Asthma Awareness Week from 27 April to 3 May.
