China is one of the tobacco-addicted countries with more than 300 million smokers, figure which is roughly close to the entire population of the United States, where offering a cigarette is a common greeting ritual.
Along with the smokers, the country also has a good number of passive tobacco inhalers as the smokers do not resist their aspiration for the cigarette, not even in hospital waiting rooms or in the elevators. The situation has frightened the authorities as the tobacco consumption has reported an increase with each passing day and drafted a nationwide ban to prohibit smoking in indoor public places.
However, the natives are not as enthusiastic about appeal as Yang Lei, a 32-year-old native and a smoker for the last four years, said that this ban would not be able to caste any significant effects on the smoking habit of people.
"In China, when you are in a restaurant, people smoke even if there is a 'No Smoking' sign. When you eat with friends, few people ask others if it's OK to smoke and restaurant managers rarely stop clients who smoke", he added further.
Meanwhile, the health experts have warned about negative effects of the tobacco and marked the second hand smoke as serious health threat.
