Hepatitis C is a liver disease which is caused by the infection with the hepatitis C virus and transmitted through the contaminated blood and can results in liver failure, liver cancer and may even require a liver transplant. According to the figures revealed from the FDA, approximately 3.2 million Americans are observed with the traits of the hepatitis C.
A Food and Drug Administration panel had supported the approval of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s (VRTX) proposed hepatitis C-drug, telaprevir, while highlighted its positive results. The drugs gained popularity as protease inhibitors and directed to curb the replication of hepatitis C virus as it blocks the enzyme that plays a role in the replication of virus.
The Wall Street Analyst seeking the FDA to endorse the medicines, telaprevir and Merck's boceprevir, as both were observed to impart speedy cure rates among the patients as compared to those who relay on the traditional medicines for curing the disease, hepatitis C.
The Vice President of global medical affairs at Vertex, Camilla Graham, said: "We are excited by today's unanimous vote to recommend FDA approval of telaprevir, as people with hepatitis C urgently need more effective medicines".
The approval of the drugs is expected to come in May.
